Which Series or Model Is My Apple Watch? Easy Ways to Tell! (2023)

Wait, what Apple Watch do I have? Since the different types of Apple Watches look very similar, it can be easy to get confused! Whether you need to know which Apple Watch case or band to order, or you’re planning to upgrade to a new Apple Watch, it’s handy to know how to identify which Apple Watch series you have. I’ll go over how to tell what Apple Watch you have, including the super quick Apple Watch serial number check.

How Do I Know Which Apple Watch I Have?

If you want to tell what Apple Watch you have, check the back of your Watch or the Watch app on your iPhone to find the model number. Then, to find your Apple Watch series, check our Apple Watch generations list to find the series using the model number.

Find Your Apple Watch Model Number

Some Watch models have the Apple Watch model number engraved on the back of the Watch. However, if it's faded or you don't see it, check the Watch app for an easy Apple Watch model number lookup. Here’s how to find your Apple Watch model number:

1. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
   
   
2. Tap the My Watch tab and then tap General.
   
   
3. Tap About.
   
   
4. On this screen, you’ll see a section that says Model. It will contain a number in it, but you'll need to tap this number to reveal the model number.
   
   
5. Once you've tapped on the number, a new four-digit number preceded by the letter A will appear. This is your Apple Watch model number.

Apple Watch Ultra (Gen 2)

While not released yet, we're expecting Apple to release the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra in September 2023.

Apple Watch Series 9

If Apple follows the pattern from previous years, the new Apple Watch Series 9 will be released in September 2023.

Apple Watch Ultra

The Apple Watch Ultra was released on September 23, 2022.

Options: GPS + Cellular 0nly
Sizes: 49 mm only

Titanium only: Titanium Starlight.

Other identifying features: Apple's first "rugged" watch with a new customizable Action Button. The Ultra is designed for extremes: extreme temperatures, extreme depths, and extreme weather conditions. Has a Dive computer and a 60-decibel siren. 36 hours of battery life that Apple claims will be extendable to 60 hours later this fall. New Low Power Mode.

Apple Watch SE (Gen 2)

The Apple Watch SE (Gen 2) was released on September 16, 2022.

Options: GPS and GPS + Cellular
Sizes: 40 mm and 44 mm cases

Colors (aluminum only): Midnight, Starlight, and Silver

Other identifying features: New Temperature Sensor as a way to track fertility and ovulation. New Crash Detection feature that uses new motion sensors that can detect real-world accidents, including head-on, rear-end, side-impact, and rollovers. Always-On Retina display. New Low Power Mode.

Apple Watch Series 8

The Apple Watch Series 8 was released on September 16, 2022.

Options: GPS and GPS + Cellular
Sizes: 41 mm and 45 mm cases

Aluminum case colors: Starlight, Midnight, Silver, and, PRODUCT(RED)
Stainless steel case colors: Gold, Silver, and Graphite
Titanium case colors: Titanium, Space Black Titanium

Apple Watch Series 6

Options: GPS and GPS + Cellular
Sizes: 40 mm and 44 mm cases

Aluminum case colors: Space gray, gold, silver, red, blue

Other identifying features: Red ring on the Digital Crown. *Important Note: All Series 3 and older Apple Watches will not be compatible watchOS 9 coming in September of 2022. You will need to upgrade your watch if you'd like to operate the most up-to-date software moving forward.
